Me Holding the Beautiful Reproduction of Geist Force for the Sega Dreamcast

Well I really didn't know how to give a proper title to this post but as given here is me holding a reproduction disk of Geist Force for the Sega Dreamcast.  This of course was released by the fabulous dudes over at www.assemblergames.com.  It had a limited release and even though its a reproduction disk I wanted a piece of Dreamcast history.

Geist Force if you didn't know already was to be released at launch with the Sega Dreamcast.  But for uncertain circumstances the game never got released.  So in later years Assembler Games got a hold of a Sega Katana (Dreamcast Dev Kit) and on this dev kit it contained a very alpha release of Geist Force.  It of course only contained two playable levels which got shown at a E3 sometime in the later 90's.  It does contain other levels but they are completely broken.

This disk of course did come with warnings from Assembler Games saying that the disk may break your Dreamcast system so use with warning.  There is of course torrents lying around the interwebs for this game and one that has a fix that makes the game playable on the Dreamcast.

I have of course done a beautiful video on this reproduction which you can see below and of course I definitely recommend it cause it gives my take on why Sega decided to not release the game.

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2, Screenshots (PC)

Some new screenshots of the very first game I got for my first computer I ever owned. Back in 2005 I bought a refurbished piece of crap HP computer that at the time had what was to become the next gen processors a Pentium 4 HT. Of course the HT went out in a few months came along a dual core. That computer died not quite sure what happened could have been cause of the power supply and what I believe a high powered video card.

Well during the time of that computer I bought the Need For Speed Collection for PC which came with Need for Speed 3 Hot Pursuit, Need For Speed Porsche Challenge, Need for Speed High Stakes, Need For Speed Underground and of course Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2. The very first game I played was Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2.

Its a great game with some horrible flaws. Hot Pursuit 2 was released on PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and of course PC. The best version of the game was released on PS2 and the rest got horrible ports and were developed by a different developer. The issues for the Xbox, Game Cube and PC versions was that they didn't look as good and I believe played a lot different.

The worse part of the PC version was it didn't get optimized so it had bad stuttering issues and lag. Is it playable yes if you can ignore the stuttering and lag. Also another issue with the PC version is that it didn't support widescreen unless you edited its display settings which of course isn't easy for beginners.

DCeric Game Previews: Hydro Thunder Hurricane (PC, Windows 8)

In this game preview I show you Hydro Thunder Hurricane for Windows 8.  I did a review not to long ago for this game on Xbox 360 but now I am showing you preview of what this game looks like on Windows 8. Remember how i said it looks different then the Xbox 360 version and has lower quality graphics.  Well its true but for good reason the game on the Xbox 360 had a tough time running and at times couldn't even keep the games framerate at 60fps.  The Windows 8 version however has a consistent 60fps and you'll find its a lot easier to play cause of it.

DCeric Game Preview: Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PC)

Today on DCeric Game Preview I show you Mortal Kombat Trilogy for PC.  I love Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 cause at the time it was the only way to enjoy a half baked version of Trilogy for the Super Nintendo.  I also didn't own the PSone until 1998 and didn't get to play the PC version until years later.

Also I have decided to go along with a new look if you like what you see please leave me a comment.  I'm thinking about using this method for future review videos when ever the time comes into doing one.

DCeric Game Preview: Terrordrome (PC)

Its the game everybody has been waiting for finally being able to fight your favorite characters from your favorite horror films.  Well at first it seemed like a great idea but this game does have its bugs and also has its compatibility issues.  The site says it works with all versions of Windows and even Mac with "Crossover Games" an application which also allows Linux users to play some Windows games and is an engine of sorts for Wine.

However though they claim the game works with all versions of Windows it does but with some issues.  The game I would say is best played in a window on Windows 8 x64 and I believe you would have to do the same with Windows 7 x64 as well.  The problem with running in fullscreen is that the game is forced to play in a compatibility window and the game is stretched where the game isn't fully visible.  This of course happens in x64 operating systems which emulate old games.  This game was created for Windows 98 and above but with that compatibility comes the issue.

I don't know where to find any options to change the difficulty and the difficulty in this game at times can make this game feel unplayable.  There is an option to lower the speed but by doing this I have found it to make you not able to control your character and the AI also becomes completely unmovable.  Another option in the game didn't work at either and that was the time option which allows you to choose the time for each battle.  I selected 0 and other times and each match was still at 98secs.

The controls are another issue I have had with this game.  With a controller the game feels quite tight and not always in sync when you press a button and this issue also happens with the keyboard as well.  I found the only way to actually win a battle is of course button mash like crazy.

I also found that some of the characters don't have a good reach like other characters do and that can make a fighter game quite difficult.  The characters that do have a good reach make the game easier in fact and you could probably beat the game easily.

The graphics in the game are plus they look beautiful for a homebrew game however the compatibility issue with x64 operating systems doesn't make us fully enjoy its beauty.  The sound in the game isn't to bad either and its beautiful they ripped some of the characters popular one liners from the films.  There a bunch of characters to fully enjoy in the game even some I haven't seen before.

Its really hard to say to if anybody would enjoy this game even if your a horror film buff.  I'd say if your into fighters and really know how to deal with the controls then maybe this is for you.  Also these guys did put a lot of hard earned time into the game and also came across a few copyright claims from Warner Bros. for using Freddy Kruger this was around the time Warner Bros. was going to include Freddy Kruger as a playable character in Mortal Kombat for PS3, PC, and Xbox 360.

If you like what you see in the video above and are aware of the issues and still would like to play the game you can get it here: http://www.terrordrome-thegame.com/

DCeric Game Preview: Quake w. HD Pack Mod (PC)

Quake was released for Dos/PC in 1996 the game of course was pretty amazing for its time and was probably one of the best looking games at the time.  In 1997 "id Software" then released GL Quake for Windows operating systems which was able to use graphics acceleration with a 3Dfx card.  It gave the game a big and major overhaul over its original release.  But it wasn't up until 2011 when one of the biggest mods of all got released called Quake HD Pack.  Simply one of the most amazing mods I have ever seen and if "id Software" ever decided to release an HD remake of the game for console I would get _Smith_ who is the creator of the mod to do it.

If you want to get this mod which I highly suggest you can get it from:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/quake-hd-pack-guide

Of course you'll also need a purchased copy of the game or you can get it from Steam here:

DCeric Game Preview: Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 with Hi-Res Hack (PC)

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 was released in 2002 for Game Cube, Xbox, PS2 and PC.  The PS2 version by far the better looking version and was developed by EA Black Box while the Game Cube, Xbox and PC versions were developed by EA Seattle.  The PS2 version had better quality graphics while the Gamecube, Xbox and PC versions lacked in quality.  The PC version got okay reviews with the biggest complaint being lag and stuttering even on high end machines which yes today still remains to be an issue.

Another issue now a day's with the PC version is that EA didn't allow people to play the game in higher resolutions and some people even had issues with it running in wide screen. Well I decided to make up a little hack for those of you who are still playing the game which will allow you to play in higher resolutions up to 1980x1080p.  On my current screen I am using the highest res which is 1680x1050 so in the screenshot below you can now see that I can select that resolution.  If your using a 1980x1080 screen you'll also be able to select that as an option.

So while the PC version doesn't look as good as the PS2 version cause of the missing water effects and other amazing graphical effects at least you can now select a higher resolution so things look a little more polished.

Download the following file and put in the C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\EA Games\Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 and overwrite the other file.  After you have done so you can now select a higher resolution.
